Wacky hair Day

Reminder: Wacky Hair Day tomorrow. On Friday, Jade Moller is our ‘Principal for the Day’. Part of being the principal is that Jade can make up a rule for the day. The rule is that this Friday is Wacky Hair Day for young and old for a gold coin donation. Jade has chosen Child Cancer as the organisation the money will go to.

Headphones - We are becoming seriously short of headphones in Ruma Weta. We had a lot of spare pairs from previous years that some children were using, but these are now slowly wearing out and are not being replaced. Headphones were part of the compulsory requirements on the stationery list for middle school for 2017. Many children now have their own pairs, but we now require all families to purchase their own pair for children to use at school. Headphones are very important for children to correctly use the maths whizz programme and for other learning online. Reasonably priced pairs ($6.50) are available at the office although the larger, slightly more expensive pairs are better for soundproofing.

Ruma Weta Mural about Creation

Last week Ruma Weta created a mural for our classroom about God's creation. We used paint and the children drew, coloured and cut out images, such as mountains, seas and animals to show the different things God created on different days. Check out the final product when it is on our wall.

Weekly Notices, Week 8, Term 2, 2017

Ruma Weta - Rooms 16 & 17, Weekly Notices, Term 2, Week 8 (19th - 23rd June 2017)

It is great to see so many children spending more time on the Maths Whizz and lexia these past two weeks. We are giving a raffle ticket for each child who does their 60 minutes on these programmes. The promotion finishes at the end of the term, just before the 3rd All Black Test, when we are giving away lots of rugby paraphernalia in a prize draw. There were a lot of St Mary’s families at the Giant Haka on Saturday amongst the 7700 who were there. It was great to see. A large number of people there were Lion’s supporters.

Please note - children should be completing 60 minutes minimum on Maths Whizz and 60 minutes on Lexia, every week regardless of the prize draw. The children get plenty of time to complete this at school but of they don’t they are expected to complete their time for homework. Some are not doing so.

Science - water as a solid - ICE

Getting children to talk about their observations when doing science is very important. They need to distinguish between true observations (just what our sight and other senses are telling us) and inferences (stories scientists make up to explain why things are happening using the evidence from observations).

Science Science everywhere

More science from rooms 16 and 17 - Ruma Weta - water tension activity, Mr Bach demonstrating to the class and Science experts from the council come to the class to teach about water.

Please encourage your children to do their best in all tests and assessments so we can get an accurate picture of where they are currently with their learning and what they need to learn next.

The week has come for our JRock group to perform. There has been a lot of last minute rehearsals taking place and it’s looking pretty good. It is a shame that the venue has had to change, but the show carries on. We have been extremely lucky to have had the help of Rebecca Daniels and the JPC students. Thanks also to Annie and Anne for coordinating the children and liaising with Rebecca. There is an optional late start for JRock performers on Tuesday morning 13th June, if children are too tired in the morning.

ICAS spelling and writing exams are on Wednesday 14th at 9am with Mr Volschenk.

Some children will be out on Friday at Ripper Rugby with Whaea Eliana from 9am.

Science with ice and salt!

This morning we had to observe ice balls and what it looks, feels, sounds and tastes like! We put some salt on the ice ball and then we squirted some coloured water on the ice and observed what happened next.
The salt sank into the ice leaving a trail where we sprinkled it.

Why? What is happening?

Science Water Testing

Ruma Weta did some more water testing last week. The children went through samples of materials netted from the Utuhina Stream to look for signs of invertebrate life (water bugs etc). The children found that it contained a number of species including Koura, caddis and stonefly that gave us some evidence that indicated the water was of good quality.
